Le Chatelier observed that chemical reactions at equilibrium will react to a disturbance by attempting to counteract the disturbance. When the disturbance is too great, the system can not balance and the system ends. On a larger scale, an ecosytstem can be unable to react to a disturbance, in the case of this photograph, lack of rain in the Berkeley Hills. The hills are waiting so long that they may turn from a statue into dust.
